Hackberry

Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is a locally grown tree with small dark fruit. Its thin, crunchy surface surrounds sweet, mealy flesh and a hard seed, giving rise to the name Candy of the Forest.

The fruit has a history of use by Indigenous peoples and early settlers, can remain on the tree into winter, and also feeds birds, deer, and small mammals.
